PRESS RELEASE: CPG Launches LearningWorks (LWP) Project

CPG LAUNCHES LEARNINGWORKS PROJECT

SYDNEY, NSW 9.00am January 11, 1999 - Q Base Projects has launched the LearningWorks Project, a private tutoring network for people of non-English Speaking Background (NESB).

LearningWorks (LWP) Project which replaces its predecessor LanguageWorks Project piloted during 1998, is one of four principal programs of the Community Participation Guarantee (CPG) venture of Q Base Projects, a socially responsible investment (SRI) of Q Base Trust. The Sydney-based private company plans to trial the suite of community action programs (Support-1, LearningWorks, DiscoveryWorks, and WorkReady) throughout the Sydney Metropolitan area over the next 36 months.

The non-profit CPG which commenced operations in the inner and eastern suburbs during mid-1997 is the first of its kind in Australia.

CPG Executive Officer, Miss Judith Lee announced that the venture’s operating format and management structure exemplify new contemporary standards of community and social activism reassured by support of a corporate sponsor willing to provide oversight of governance and risk management.

CPG estimates continuing strong growth in demand for LearningWorks, which has accrued a diverse client base via direct marketing and community referrals. This has been matched with an extensive recruitment drive for private tutors and interest from work experience candidatures.

Sydney’s multicultural ‘melting pot’ city in which one on five Australians were born overseas or have a parent born overseas and interested in tutoring to improve their English language competency, makes it an ideal location for the LearningWorks trial, says Miss Lee. LearningWorks has already commenced client and tutor registrations and will be trialling the private tutoring concept under the supervision of dedicated CPG project leaders responsible for course design, teaching and learning, and evaluation.

CPG will also be conducting client census at key stage-gates of the learning program to assess group progress, resource efficiency and overall efficacy of the concept. The project mandate is to identify appropriate approaches to client-centred, community and policy design Miss Lee explained.

“LWP (CPG) clients appreciate the one on one instruction format and demonstrate improved self-esteem and a positive outlook on their continuing learning program,” she said.
