PRESS RELEASE: Support-1 (SP-1) at the Downing Centre Local Courts

SUPPORT-1 (SP-1) AT THE DOWNING CENTRE LOCAL COURTS

SYDNEY, NSW 9.00am September 21, 1998 - CPG Support-1 (SP-1) Project serves role as Community Advocate and Friend of the Court at the Downing Centre Local Court.

Community Participation Guarantee (CPG) has yesterday provided Friend of the Court services associated with the Support-1 (SP-1) Project, at the Downing Centre Local Court located opposite Museum Station and Hyde Park in Sydney CBD. CPG Representative, Miss Judith Lee, attending as amicus curiae together with CPG Support-1 client met with Stephen Doumer, a pro bono lawyer from the NSW Legal Aid Services to provide community advocacy for a public case convened in the Magistrate’s Court on Level 4, 43-147 Liverpool Street, Sydney.

Proceedings in the NSW Local Courts happen very quickly, and the help of community advocates is much needed to assist local court users cope with the stresses and unfamiliarity of the ‘legalese’ environment.

“Mr Doumer has the personable qualities of a duty lawyer, and was helpful in explaining the nature of our proceedings and what may be expected to happen in court about our matter,’ said Miss Lee.

Formally attired for the days hearing, she continued, “a competent person willing to talk to the magistrate on the client’s behalf and moral support of friend at court can go a long way to alleviating the many felt distresses impacting on our client. And also it is a show of community involvement, advocacy and help against power imbalances and the intimidations of bureaucracy.”

“In fact, a large number of cases in NSW local courts are unrepresented, so the amicus curiae role is a valuable buffer that may help people to obtain fair treatment when presenting for their subpoena at court,” she said.

This week’s hearing represents one of the first major events for CPG, which commenced operations in Sydney metropolitan area earlier this year.
